Residents and visitors to the City of Joondalup can now play an active role in monitoring coastal erosion by using the newly installed CoastSnap station at the Iluka Beach lookout.
CoastSnap is a coastal monitoring initiative that relies on community members to become citizen scientists, contributing their smartphone images taken at the fixed cradle by uploading to the CoastSnap platform using a QR code. This enables the program to turn these photographs taken of the same shoreline location over time into valuable coastline data. Every photo helps to build a long-term record of coastal change, supporting better planning and resilience.
The CoastSnap images captured at Iluka Foreshore Reserve will be used alongside other data that is collected through the City of Joondalup’s Coastal Monitoring Program to help inform and forecast future coastal planning. The CoastSnap station at Iluka Foreshore Reserve is proudly supported by the City as a part of Perth NRM’s Building Coastal Resilience in Perth Communities project, funded by the Australian Government’s Disaster Ready Fund and supported by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services.
