Dementia Action Week is a leadership, awareness and advocacy campaign led by Dementia Australia. Held from 21 - 27 September 2026, this year’s theme, ‘It’s time to talk about dementia’ encourages greater understanding, inclusion and support for all people affected by dementia.
Every conversation about dementia, whether at home, in the workplace or in the community, can help someone feel less alone and more confident seeking support. Talking about dementia can lead to earlier diagnosis, better access to services and stronger support for people living with dementia, their families and carers.
The City is proud to support the following dementia-friendly initiatives that help people stay connected and engaged.
Forget-Me-Not Memory Cafes
The City, in partnership with Forget-Me-Not, hosts monthly dementia support cafes at Duncraig and Woodvale Library, providing a welcoming and relaxed environment for those living with memory loss, their families and carers. These free sessions offer opportunities to share experiences, build friendships and access information in a supportive community setting.
Dementia Memory Bags
Dementia memory bags are available at all Joondalup Libraries and offer a simple way to help people living with dementia and their families reconnect through shared memories and conversation. Each bag is carefully curated with items themed around cooking, beach, garden, music or sport, encouraging reminiscence and connection around familiar experiences. These memory bags are available for loan with a Joondalup Libraries membership.
By providing opportunities for connection, learning and support, these initiatives help make our community more inclusive and enable people living with dementia to remain engaged with the people and places that matter most.
