The City takes a holistic approach to improving access and inclusion and creating communities for people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.
Here are some of the current services, partnerships and initiatives you may not know about!

Access and Inclusion Plan
All local governments in WA must have a Disability Access and Inclusion Plan. Our Access and Inclusion Plan 2021-22 to 2023-24 was approved by Council in November 2021 and has been extended to 2025-26. The plan aims to address physical accessibility and social inclusion for everyone visiting, working or living in the City of Joondalup.
A new plan will be developed in the next year. Keep an eye out for the opportunity to contribute during the consultation period.

Documents in alternative formats
Many of the City’s written documents are available in alternative formats on request. These may include large print, alternative language, braille and Easy English versions. To enquire about getting a document in an alternative format, contact the City on 9400 4000 or email info@joondalup.wa.gov.au.

Changing Places
Changing Places are secure, clean bathrooms specifically designed for people with disability who require additional space and assistance to manage their bathroom needs while out in the community. They are larger than standard accessible toilets and include a hoist, a height-adjustable adult-sized changing table, a shower and an automatic door. Within the City of Joondalup, Changing Places facilities are located at Sorrento Beach, Craigie Leisure Centre, and at the food court in Lakeside Joondalup Shopping Centre.

Disability beach access
Accessible beach equipment, including all-terrain walkers and beach wheelchairs, is available to help people with disability or low mobility enjoy our beaches. This equipment can be accessed at Mullaloo Beach, Sorrento Beach, and Hillarys Boat Harbour. Seasonal access matting is also available at Hillarys Boat Harbour and Mullaloo Beach to support people who have difficulty navigating sand. The City thanks Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club, Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club, and Hillarys Boat Harbour for their valuable support in maintaining this important service.

Accessible pool and gym equipment
Craigie Leisure Centre offers a range of state-of-the-art universal access facilities for everyone to enjoy, including:

  • Pool access
  • aqua wheelchairs
  • adult-sized change table
  • handrail access to the spa.

The Centre also provides a range of accessible strength and conditioning equipment designed to support people of all abilities, including wheelchair users and people with limited mobility. These machines help improve upper and lower body strength and can be used during both general gym sessions and accessible fitness programs.

ACROD parking bays
Disability or accessible parking is available throughout the City of Joondalup. If an easy-access bay is not available, disability parking permit holders can park in a standard parking bay and still receive the concessions provided by the City. For more information visit parking restrictions.

The Community Transport Program
The Community Transport Program helps eligible people who do not drive and have difficulty using public transport. The program offers a door-to-door service to travel to shopping centres, seniors clubs and libraries within the City. To find out more, visit Community Transport.

Sensory story time at Whitford Library
Free sessions are available for children looking to experience story time in a quiet, small group setting. This involves stories, songs and activities, followed by sensory playtime. These sessions may help children enjoy story time in a way that supports their individual sensory needs. For more information, see Sensory story time.

Auslan interpreting services
Auslan interpreters are provided for City events such as the Valentine’s Concert and Music in the Park. These services provide accessible events that the entire community can be part of and join in the fun. The City also provides free Auslan interpreting services to anyone who requires them to conduct City business.

Assisted bin service
The City’s waste team offers a special assistance service for residents who require help moving bins due to mobility concerns. People can apply for the service by emailing info@joondalup.wa.gov.au.
