Library and Information Week is celebrated from Monday 28 July-Sunday 3 August and this year’s theme is To read or not to read – Literacy matters.

To recognise Library and Information Week, we are giving away free copies of our brand-new Library Time Rhymes and Songs book to all families who attend one of our weekly children’s events. .

This colourful 28-page book is full of our favourite songs and nursery rhymes, so that families can practice their singing at home, ready for their weekly rhyme time session.

Pop along to Rhyme time, Story time, Toddler time, STEAMING into Story Time or Family Time over the week to collect your free copy. Visit the Library services and events page for times and locations of each session.

The book will be available to purchase from all library branches for $5, from Monday 4 August.

How nursery rhymes help with children’s literacy:

  • Language development – Rhymes introduce new vocabulary and sentence patterns in a fun, memorable way.
  • Listening skills – Repetition and rhythm help children tune into sounds, a key skill for phonics.
  • Phonemic awareness – Rhyming patterns teach how words are built and broken down.
  • Reading confidence – Familiar rhymes make early reading experiences enjoyable and less intimidating.
