The verdict is in. Local bike riders have given the City’s new asphalt track at Lysander Park the thumbs up.
In May 2025, Joondalup Mayor Albert Jacob, North Central Ward Councillor Nige Jones and Joondalup MLA Emily Hamilton were in Heathridge to check out the track and upgraded park facilities.
The centrepiece of a $600,000 refurbishment project, managed and delivered by the City, and fully funded by the State Government, the track caters for riders of all ages and abilities. It features junior and intermediate loops and a stabilised limestone mountain bike skills section.
Associated work at the park included a new picnic setting and shelter, bench seating, drinking fountain and improvements to the footpath network. New plants and mulched areas have added to the park’s aesthetics.
Mayor Jacob said the Lysander track, together with the successful completion of a similar project at Padbury’s Gibson Park earlier this year, showed the City was committed to offering high-quality facilities that encourage young people to get outdoors and stay active.
“The City has been guided by the findings of its Youth Recreation Strategy, which identified a need for more facilities of this nature across our City – safe and supportive environments for young people to showcase their skills,” he said.
“These bike track projects are proving immensely popular with our residents. The good news doesn’t stop here, with another track to be built at Whitfords West Park in Kallaroo and the jewel in our crown, Duncraig Adventure Hub, set to open later this year.”
Member for Joondalup, Emily Hamilton MLA said: “I am so pleased that the Cook Labor Government has delivered $600,000 for this new community facility that is already being well utilised by families from across the local area.”
Sport and Recreation Minister Rita Saffioti said the completion of the pump bike track was exciting news for the local community, especially entry level BMX riders.
“The facility will provide a safe and supportive avenue to get young people outdoors and active participating in an increasingly popular sport,” she said.
“The new amenities will also help create a new social hub for the broader community.”
