As a proud Plastic Free July Council Member, we are committed to supporting our community to reduce single-use plastic waste and be part of a Plastic Free Future.
Plastic Free July is a global movement that began in Perth and now inspires millions of people in over 190 countries to take action on plastic waste. The campaign helps individuals, households, schools, businesses and governments make simple, practical changes that reduce plastic use and create lasting habits.
The impact of this collective action is significant. In 2025, an estimated 174 million people took part worldwide, helping to avoid 290 million kilograms of plastic waste. These results show that when communities come together, small everyday choices can lead to meaningful environmental outcomes.
As a Council Member, we are working to bring Plastic Free July to life across our community. This includes:
- encouraging residents to take simple, achievable steps to reduce plastic waste
- supporting schools, businesses and community groups to get involved
- promoting local initiatives, events and resources that make participation easier
- creating opportunities for the community to learn, share and inspire one another.
The goal is to make it as easy as possible for everyone to be part of the solution.
Take the Plastic Free Pledge – July 1
In 2026, we are encouraging our community to take part in a global day of action on July 1, by making a Pledge to refuse single-use plastic
The Plastic Free Pledge is a simple way to get involved. Choose one single-use plastic item to avoid, such as single-use coffee cups and water bottles, plastic bags or food wrap, and give it a go.
By taking the pledge, you are:
- taking a practical step to reduce waste
- building habits that can last beyond July
- joining millions of people around the world in a shared moment of action.
Small changes, lasting impact
Reducing plastic doesn’t have to be complicated. Simple swaps, like bringing a reusable cup, choosing loose produce, or using reusable containers, can quickly become part of everyday life.
These small actions add up. Together, they help reduce waste, protect our environment, and create a cleaner, healthier future for our community.
Be part of a Plastic Free Future
Plastic Free July is about more than one month, it’s about creating lasting change.
We invite everyone in our community to take part, start with one simple change, and be part of a global movement working towards a Plastic Free Future.
Getting started
Set yourself and your household up for success by planning ahead and identifying areas to focus on throughout the month. Here are a few ideas to help you get started:
- Hosting a birthday or event? Loan the City’s reusable party kit from Woodvale Library.
- Heading out for a coffee or hot drink? Bring your own reusable cup or mug. If you don’t have one, choose to dine in instead.
- Forgot to pack a work lunch? Dine in rather than choosing takeaway.
- Walking the dog? Carry a bag and pick up litter along the way.
- Shopping at the shops or markets? Choose loose fruit and vegetables or use reusable produce bags.
- Dining out? Pack reusable containers to take home leftovers.
