Australia wide, approximately two billion nappies end up in landfill each year, comprising of four percent of total landfill.
Statistics show that a child produces around 352kg of disposable nappy waste before being toilet trained. Within Joondalup the average birth rate is 1,701 per year (2011-2023) – therefore it is estimated around 299 tonnes of nappy waste is sent to landfill each year within the City.

The Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy 2030 have stated three key strategy elements with the vision of Western Australia to become a sustainable, low waste, circular economy. One of the key objectives is ‘Avoid – generate less waste’.
In alignment with these commitments and strategies the City has established the Cloth Nappy Project - a community education and support program, providing parents with the knowledge and skills to integrate reusable nappies. Across the next year the City will run cloth nappy workshops for residents in partnership with local cloth nappy expert, Earthside Eco Bums.
Within the workshops participants will:
- see how cloth nappies work
- learn exactly what you’ll need (no fluff, just facts)
- gain real-life support – we’ll keep you reaching for reusables instead of disposables
- receive personalised guidance – advice that actually works for your family
- Access a free start-up pack (City of Joondalup residents only)
Some of the benefits of cloth are:
- Great for baby – gentle chemical free and breathable.
- Positive for the planet – reduce waste.
- Beneficial for your wallet – save approximately $3,000 per child.
