A long-awaited roundabout at the junction of Lakeside Drive and Joondalup Drive is now complete, significantly improving safety and traffic flow at one of the City’s busiest intersections.

Joondalup Deputy Mayor Adrian Hill, North Ward Councillor Lewis Hutton and local riders were on hand in late-July to see the finished project for themselves.

The $3.1 million project – managed by the City of Joondalup and partially funded by the State Government – took approximately eight months to complete.

Designed to enhance road safety and reduce congestion, the new roundabout features:

  • high-friction asphalt surfacing to reduce skidding and improve braking
  • upgraded lighting for improved night-time visibility
  • enhanced pedestrian and cycling paths to support active transport.

In addition, a second State Government-funded* roundabout at the nearby Lakeside Drive/Aldgate Street intersection also opened to traffic – providing easier entry into and exit out of the Yalbunullup Mountain Bike Trails.

Deputy Mayor Hill said the upgrades reflected the community’s growing demand for safer, more efficient transport infrastructure.

“These improvements are about more than just traffic flow – they’re about creating a safer, more connected community,” he said.

“I thank motorists and pedestrians for their patience during construction works, but the short-term inconvenience will be worth it for many years to come.

“This project is another example of local and State Government working collaboratively to the benefit of the local community.”

Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) Manager Regional Parks Tim Fisher said the completed works would make it easier for people to enjoy the new, family-friendly urban mountain bike facilities in Yellagonga Regional Park.

“This has been a great opportunity for the department to work closely with the City of Joondalup to enable safer and improved access to Yalbunullup Mountain Bike Trails and the new visitor facilities that opened late last year,” Mr Fisher said.

Of the works, Joondalup MLA Emily Hamilton said: “It will make it easier for locals and visitors alike to embrace our new natural recreational space that is right on our doorstep. I am committed to delivering the important projects that will continue to grow Joondalup as Perth’s second CBD.”
