Long-awaited safety improvements are set to begin this month at the Hepburn Avenue–Walter Padbury Boulevard intersection in Padbury.
The upgrade includes asphalt skid-resistant treatments, enhanced lighting, and upgraded facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.
The improvements aim to address years of safety concerns voiced by the Padbury Heights community, particularly regarding access to Hepburn Avenue.
The project is part of a broader initiative to enhance traffic management in the area, with plans to install traffic signals at the nearby Hepburn Avenue–Lilburne Avenue intersection.
Hillarys MLA Caitlin Collins helped the City to receive a funding commitment for the project from the State Government.
Joondalup Mayor Albert Jacob said local residents have been calling for upgrades for years.
“There have been many recorded crashes at the intersection, including 12 that occurred in 2024 alone, and the installation of a roundabout is expected to greatly improve safety for road users, assisting to slow vehicle movement and help prevent serious injuries and deaths,” Mayor Jacob said.
“The City has worked closely with Main Roads WA to ensure the upgrades deliver a safer experience for road users, and we thank them as well as the Member for Hillarys, Caitlin Collins, for her advocacy in helping to secure State Government funding.”
Hillarys MLA Caitlin Collins said: “Many locals have shared with me troubling stories about their near-misses at these intersections.
“It’s fantastic that the State Government and the City of Joondalup are working together to deliver a much-needed road safety upgrade for our community.”
Works are expected to take around 16 weeks and be completed by mid-2025.
