The City of Joondalup has taken proactive steps to ensure the safety of beachgoers by temporarily closing Hillarys Dog Beach, effective 1pm today.
Recent heavy storms have exposed building debris and other materials along the shoreline. In addition, steep embankments have formed across much of the dog beach area, increasing the risk to public safety.
City crews will be operating heavy machinery in the area to remove debris, which may include asbestos and other dangerous materials. Licensed asbestos experts will be working closely with the City to manage and safely remove any contaminated material.
Access to the affected beach section is prohibited until further notice.
Joondalup Mayor Albert Jacob said: “The City appreciates the public’s understanding and cooperation as we work to restore the area. For everyone’s safety, access to this section of beach will remain restricted while works are underway.”
“City teams will complete works as quickly as they can to minimise disruption to the public.”
Dog owners are still able to exercise their animals at the City’s many dog-friendly parks, including the dedicated fenced dog exercise area at Elcar Park, Joondalup.
Updates will be provided via the City’s official social media channels and website.
