The City proudly delivered its second Native Plant Giveaway program from January to May 2025 as part of our shared commitment to creating cooler, greener, and more waterwise neighbourhoods.

The Native Plant Giveaway 2025 included 1,300 waterwise and native plant packs and a total of 8,000 plants being distributed across two community events in April and May. Each of these packs went to first-time participants - residents who had not previously taken part in the City’s Waterwise Verge Rebate Program or a previous Native Plant Giveaway. This was a meaningful step in supporting more households to begin their native and waterwise gardening journey.

Participants received the following:

  • Five free native plant seedlings, with a choice between two specially curated plant packs.
  • An optional habitat tree seedling—80 per cent of which are species that provide food sources for Carnaby’s Black Cockatoos.
  • Resources on how to create waterwise, wildlife-friendly native gardens.
  • An invitation to a free waterwise native gardening workshop, where participants learned more about starting their gardens and received up to three additional native seedlings.
  • Ongoing support and guidance from an Environmental Project Officer.

Native Plant Giveaway events

Successful participants collected their plants at two events held on Saturday 26 April and Sunday 26 May 2025 at the Wildflower Society of WA’s Northern Suburbs Branch. These events created an opportunity for successful participants to learn more about native gardening for wildlife.

Several information stalls were available at the plant giveaway events, including a stall hosted by representatives from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, where attendees learned how to identify and help prevent the spread of invasive pests like Polyphagous Shot-Hole Borer (PSHB). Attendees also had the chance to purchase additional plants and supplies to support their waterwise gardening projects.

Community impact

In total, the program distributed over 8,000 native and waterwise plants, helping to boost local biodiversity, expand urban tree canopy and create stronger habitat corridors for native wildlife. These plants will flourish in our local soil and climate conditions, requiring less water and care while offering long-term environmental and community benefits.

By choosing native plants, residents are helping to build a biodiverse, climate-resilient community. Stay tuned for our Native Plant Giveaway 2026 by subscribing to the City’s Sustainability eNewsletter

The Native Plant Giveaway is proudly co-funded by Water Corporation’s Waterwise Greening Scheme and forms part of the City’s work through the WA Tree Festival. Together, we’re creating a greener future—one garden, one street, and one community at a time.
