The City permits the use of solid fuel barbecues, pizza ovens, chimeneas, fire pits, and outdoor wood heaters on private property for cooking and heating purposes only, provided the following conditions are met:
- No Total Fire Ban is in effect (as declared by DFES).
- A 3-metre clearance around the unit is maintained, free of flammable material.
- The apparatus is attended at all times during use.
- Only appropriate solid fuels are used. For example, dry firewood, heat beads and coal.
- No burning of garden waste or rubbish is permitted.
- Smoke should be managed to avoid nuisance to neighbours.
Fire pits should be placed in open, safe locations—away from homes, fences, overhanging branches, and flammable structures—and must only be used for heating or cooking.
Barbecues in City parks and reserves are limited to City-installed and managed units. The use of personal outdoor cooking or heating devices in these areas is not allowed without prior approval.
