Waste Guide and tipping vouchers go online

The City of Joondalup is taking new measures to enhance its reputation as WA’s leading local government when it comes to environmental sustainability.

In 2022/23, residents will be able to download the annual waste guide directly from the City’s website, saving about 1.5 tonnes of paper every year.

Greens tipping and shredded green waste (mulch) vouchers will also move to an online format.

Vouchers only need to be shown on a phone or iPad at the recycling facility for the QR code to be scanned (along with a valid ID to show proof of address, if requested).

Joondalup Mayor Albert Jacob said sustainability was an important focus for the City and these simple measures could make a big difference.

“The City has programs to ensure the sustainable use of natural resources and we are always trying to improve,” he said.

“Putting the waste guide and tipping vouchers online will save an enormous amount of paper.

“We receive many calls from residents who have misplaced their tipping vouchers each year, so, for the majority, the move to an online system will be far more convenient.”

Mayor Jacob said the City’s commitment to environmental management was recognised locally, nationally and internationally as best practice.

“The City’s Waste Management Plan aims to minimise waste to landfill through sustainable waste management practices which incorporate reduce, re-use, recovery, and recycling principles,” he said.

“The City has been working towards waste reduction goals for a number of years, for example bringing in the three-bin system to reduce waste going to landfill.”

Residents can get help to download their voucher and access the guide online at any of the City Libraries and from the Customer Service team at the Administration building

Print copies will also be available on request.

The City is considering other ways to minimise the amount of paper being sent to residents.

Ratepayers are encouraged to sign up to a paperless system via the City’s e-rates platform in the lead-up to the issuing of rates notices in the next few weeks.

Other measures will be promoted on the City’s website and social media platforms.
