Araatika: Rise Up!

Araatika: Rise Up! is a powerful documentary exploring Aboriginal culture, representation and resilience through the world of rugby league.

The Aboriginal word “araatika,” meaning “rise up,” serves as a call for unity, pride and collective action. Directed by acclaimed First Nations filmmaker Larissa Behrendt, the documentary follows former NRL player Dean Widders as he works to create a pre-game ceremony celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, while responding to the Māori haka and challenging racism within the sport.

Through interviews with prominent First Nations voices including Stan Grant, Adam Goodes, Mal Meninga and Stephen Page, the film explores the powerful connection between sport, storytelling, identity and community.
