A true trailblazer of Western Australian netball and a proud local of the City of Joondalup, Gail Wright’s talent shone from an early age. She represented WA in the State Schoolgirls teams of 1963 and 1964 and earned All Australian Schoolgirl honours both years — an early sign of the success to come.
Gail’s playing career was nothing short of remarkable. She is one of only two Western Australians to feature in all five State Open National Championship-winning teams of the 20th century (1969–1974) and proudly captained WA to a three-way tie in 1976. She made her Australian debut in 1975 under legendary coach Joyce Brown, helping her country claim victory at the World Championship in New Zealand. Gail went on to represent Australia until 1979, including at the Fifth World Championship in Trinidad, and served as vice-captain during the Golden Jubilee Test Series.
Known for her energy, leadership and fierce determination as a centre/ Wing Attack, Gail earned multiple Best and Fairest awards and won the prestigious R&I Medal four times (now known as the Jill McIntosh medal). After retiring from elite competition, she devoted her time to coaching, umpiring and mentoring young players across the Joondalup community — particularly at Mullaloo and Sorrento Primary Schools.
Her passion, sportsmanship and lifelong commitment to the game continue to inspire generations, recognised through her induction into the Hall of Champions (2018) and the Court of Champions (2022).
