Sorrento Beach

Sorrento Beach offers excellent family swimming and turquoise water laps against pure white sand, making it an idyllic spot for a relaxing afternoon of beach fun.

Sorrento Beach is located directly south of the bustling Hillarys Boat Harbour, which is home to plenty of restaurants and cafes, as well as the Aquarium of Western Australia.

The Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club provides peace of mind with lifeguard patrols on weekends and public holidays, while midweek lifeguard patrols are provided by the City in conjunction with Surf Life Saving WA.

Removal of Beach Enclosure

The City of Joondalup in conjunction with the State Government installed a beach enclosure at Sorrento Beach in late 2016, however at its November 2020 meeting, Joondalup Council unanimously resolved to remove the Sorrento Beach enclosure due to the compromised integrity of the structure. Removal of the beach enclosure has been completed.

The City will investigate options for the provision of a replacement enclosure. This will enable the City to adequately investigate and plan appropriately to implement a new enclosure, aided by the lessons learnt from the Sorrento Beach enclosure.

Ninja Warrior Course at Whitfords Nodes

Visitors to Whitfords Nodes Park in Hillarys can unleash their inner warrior at the City of Joondalup park Ninja Warrior Obstacle Course located at the popular health and wellbeing hub located near the 145-step stairway structure and fitness equipment.

The Warrior Course is the first mega course in Australia and has been designed in a similar fashion to the obstacles on the popular Australian Ninja Warrior TV show. The challenge is to complete each obstacle landing only on the green mounds following the circuit route from start to finish.

It is appropriate for users aged 12 and over and is a fun way to develop strength and agility.

Please be aware that this facility is not available for booking or exclusive use by individuals as it is a public facility (similar to the City’s playspaces and other fitness installations).

Important: if you have a medical condition, are overweight, aged over 40 or haven’t exercised in a long time, before starting a new exercise program, you should have a medical check-up. Please note that the City is not liable for any injury or loss sustained as a result of using the equipment.

Hillarys Beach Park (Whitfords Nodes Health and Wellbeing Hub)

Transformation into the health and wellbeing hub

Whitfords Nodes Health and Wellbeing Hub at Hillarys Beach Park now includes a large shaded public playground for the enjoyment of children aged between two and 12 years old. The playground includes swings, combination and climbing units, nature play elements, sand play and all-abilities play. The park also has many undercover picnic settings, benches and barbecues, new tree planting, an improved irrigation system, drink fountains and universal access footpaths.

At the base of the stairway is a dedicated outdoor fitness equipment area suited to body weight exercises and calisthenics.

The health and wellbeing hub is also home to Australia’s largest outdoor park warrior course featuring 16 innovative and challenging obstacles over a 78 metre soft fall surface. Participants can register and record their times via an app, available by scanning a QR code located at the starting line of the course, allowing them to challenge themselves or others.

Community mediation service

Disputes between neighbours can often lead to disharmony, frustration and/or anger. While it is better to resolve issues between the parties openly and respectfully to find common ground or a solution to the problem, sometimes communication can break down or a matter cannot be resolved. In these situations mediation can assist.

Mediation is a dispute resolution method where parties in dispute can meet with an independent and neutral mediator to help resolve disputes and negotiate a fair and workable outcome.

The first point of contact for mediation will be the City’s Customer Relations Advocate, and the process will be coordinated and conducted by the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB). The mediation process is guided by two experienced and professionally qualified mediators.

Types of issues

Examples of issues that can be mediated include:

Dividing fences

  • Erecting a new fence
  • Claiming part payment for a fence erected
  • Damage and repair of dividing fences.

Encroaching roots and branches

  • Overhanging branches into another property
  • Roots that encroach into another property
  • Cutting/trimming of branches and roots
  • Disputes related to damage caused by trees and other plants.

Please refer to the City’s Community Mediation Brochure for further information.

When lodging a complaint, you can expect a response within seven days. However, if the matter cannot be resolved within seven days, the City will provide you an interim response with the name and contact details of the officer and area who is dealing with the matter.
