A Good Yarn: Celebrating ten years of knitting and giving

This year, the Knit 1, Yarn 2 craft group celebrates its ten-year anniversary. Established in 2014 by coordinator Susan Russell, the group came together following a call for volunteers to do a yarn bombing ‘50s set for Joondalup Festival.  

At the conclusion of the festival, Susan proposed that a knitting and crocheting group be formed, and Knit 1, Yarn 2 yarn craft club was born.  

Now at a stable size of 20 members, founders Susan Russell, Margaret Brooker, Teresa Williams and Jackie Johnson are the only original members. The group is inclusive, welcoming members of all ages, genders, cultures, identities and abilities, and meets monthly at the Joondalup Library.  

As well as knitting and crocheting, the group provides social opportunities for members. Susan Russell said the members enjoy a friendly chat, sharing their knowledge and ideas. “Primarily, the group is a social one, where we can share our love of our art form,” she said.  

“We have a lovely group of kind and generous crafters who knit and chat and take an active interest in the welfare of the members and our families. I think one of the benefits is to affirm, appreciate and encourage the skill and time involved in creating beautiful items with yarn.”  

Many of the beautiful items are donated to countless charity groups. Through a partnership with the Lions Club of Wanneroo, the group make and donate children’s clothes and toys for Grandparents Rearing Grandchildren WA, blankets and dog coats for RSPCA in Malaga, Trauma Teddies for Red Cross WA, and sensory toys for Autism WA, to name just a few.  

The partnership also saw the group knit babies clothes and blankets for King Edward Memorial Hospital, Perth Children’s Hospital, and Pregnancy Assist.  

The Women and Newborn Health Services team at King Edward Memorial Hospital were extremely grateful for the beautiful clothes, so lovingly knitted for their patients. Senior social worker, Gillian, thanked the group for their kindness and generosity. “These clothes will be given to our patients who have a premature baby in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. I know our families will be very grateful to receive them.”  

The group has achieved a great deal over the past ten years, supporting each other and those in the community who need additional support. A little yarn certainly goes a long way and can help a lot of people.

 

Summer Reading Quest – last days!

Congratulations to all those who participated in the Summer Reading Quest. The last day is Thursday 29 February 2024.

To go into the statewide draw to win some awesome prizes, submit your reading details to Summer Reading Quest website or just drop your Booklet or Summer Steps into your local Library by Sunday 31 March 2024.

Prizes include: writing workshops, art prints, a place in the Young Writers Program at the Literature Centre, books, puppets, Better Beginnings kits, gift vouchers and much more.

About

Joondalup Library is one of the busiest public library in Western Australia. Joondalup Library opened its doors in 1997 as part of a civic and administration centre. Since then it has been proudly serving Joondalup’s community, providing access to meeting rooms, technology and a vast range of books, DVDs, CDs and other formats, just to name a few.

Reference collection

Located on the lower ground floor within the Joondalup Library, the Reference area houses a large collection suitable for students and researchers of all ages.

Do you like to get outdoors with your children? 

In addition to regular Story Time sessions, City of Joondalup Libraries will be taking Story Time out to popular local parks in November. 

Invite your friends for a morning of stories, adventure and nature craft. There will be some fun games and activities, making the most of the outdoors.

City of Joondalup Libraries host events for children every school holidays. The sessions are fun, interactive and educational. A variety of presenters and creative sessions are included.

Events are suitable for children aged five to 12 years. Each event costs $4.00 and must be paid online. Bookings are essential and open two weeks before the start of the holidays. Bookings can be made direct on the City’s events calendar.

Library services for jobseekers

City of Joondalup libraries have a variety of resources to help job seekers of all ages.

Book collection

The Libraries’ Business, Finance and Careers section has a selection of quality resources to assist in the development of resumes, tips about applying for jobs and other useful resources for all job seekers. You can search for items through the library catalogue.

Online resources

The City libraries offer a range of online training courses that can assist you to improve your work-related skills. There are hundreds of available courses including tutorials on using software such as Word and Excel, as well as skills such as office administration, book-keeping and working in a team. If you need a CV/resume you can access several sites that will assist you with writing it.

Computers and other facilities

Computers, scanning and printing facilities are available at all Library branches.

Spaces

The Reference area at the Joondalup Library is a great place for individual and quiet group study. There is a range of seating, plus two small study rooms that can be booked for 2-hour periods. There are also facilities for photocopying and printing (for a charge) and scanning to USB or email.

Resources

The Reference collection includes a wide range of ATAR Unit 3 and 4 revision materials, including ‘best answers’ books, exam revision books, subject revision guides and subject study guides, plus copies of recent exam papers. The reference collection also includes recent works in all subject areas, the majority of which can be borrowed on a 7-day loan.

The Libraries also subscribe to a range of online resources.

A range of activities are also available at the Reference area, including colouring-in, jigsaws and tabletop games. Check the schedule for October and November for additional activities, and a visit by the Story Dogs.

Joondalup Library celebrates 25 years

On 13 July 1997, Joondalup Library opened its doors for the first time after 20 months of construction. This July the City celebrates your Library’s 25 year milestone. To commemorate the occasion, Joondalup Library is offering a stylish new library card for members who join at Joondalup Library. This is a limited edition print run, so cards will only be available for a short time.

The card features the work of local artist Kyle Hughes-Odgers who designed and painted the beautiful mural in the Joondalup Library Children’s area.

Members who join at other branches during the celebrations can choose from four membership card designs plus a brand new card featuring the Western Australian native, Eucalyptus Kruseana (Bookleaf Mallee).

About Kyle Hughes-Odgers

Kyle Hughes-Odgers is a multi-disciplinary Australian Visual Artist. You may have seen his wonderful silo artwork in Merredin.

His work is inspired by nature, the built environment, human behaviour, and how these subjects intersect. Kyle expands on these ideas by exploring colour, abstraction, form, line, and incorporating narrative where relevant.

He has been exhibiting his work since 2005 including solo exhibitions in Australia, Germany, The Netherlands, Spain, The United States and Austria.

In addition to his exhibition works, Kyle has created artwork / murals in 12 countries and has 6 children’s books published in Australia, New Zealand, Spain, China and Turkey. Explore his gallery of work here.

Mural project with Sioux Tempestt

The Whitford Library foyer is being transformed by artist in residence, Sioux Tempestt. Sioux creates abstract, mural, sculptural and digital art and several of her large-scale murals can be found throughout Perth.

Community workshops were held with seniors, schools and children throughout June to develop concepts for the mural. In the next phase of the project, Sue will set up her workshop as Artist in Residence in the Whitford Library meeting room from Monday 27 June to Tuesday 21July.

About Sioux Tempestt

Transcending creative disciplines Sioux creates abstract, mural, sculptural and digital art which meaningfully contributes to its context. Her work aims to create a narrative and connection as Sioux believes art plays an intrinsic contribution to our wellbeing, health, and happiness – more so now than ever.

Sioux is passionate about working with the community – young people in particular, mentoring and facilitating creative workshops for local governments and schools. She constantly pushes the boundaries of her practice to communicate and share her tremendous positivity and energy for life.

Large scale murals form part of Sioux’s practice and you’ll find several painted throughout Perth. Among other clients, Sioux has produced artistic projects for Curtin University, the City of Perth, the City of Melville, the City of Stirling, the City of South Perth, the City of Vincent, the Town of Victoria Park, the City of Subiaco, the Town of Claremont, Coles, Dale Alcock and Hawaiian.

Sioux has delivered 10 solo exhibitions and exhibited in numerous group shows. Among other achievements Sioux’s ‘Dirty Beats’ music video is an official selection of the 2022 Revelation Perth International Film Festival. Sioux received a Highly Commended, City of Bayswater Art Award, 2021; was a Finalist, City of Busselton Art Award, 2021; Finalist, Perth Royal Art Prize, 2019; Finalist, City of Rockingham Castaways Sculpture Awards, 2019; Finalist, Minnawarra Art Awards, 2021; Finalist, Town of Claremont Art Awards, 2021; Highly Commended, City of South Perth Emerging Artist Award 2018; Highly Commended, Town of Bassendean Visual Art Award 2018; Finalist, City of Joondalup 2018 Community Invitation Art Award.

Sioux is curator of the Darlington Arts Festival Sculpture on the Scarp 2022. Her work is held in public and private collections.

Sorrento Beach

Sorrento Beach offers excellent family swimming and turquoise water laps against pure white sand, making it an idyllic spot for a relaxing afternoon of beach fun.

Sorrento Beach is located directly south of the bustling Hillarys Boat Harbour, which is home to plenty of restaurants and cafes, as well as the Aquarium of Western Australia.

The Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club provides peace of mind with lifeguard patrols on weekends and public holidays, while midweek lifeguard patrols are provided by the City in conjunction with Surf Life Saving WA.

Removal of Beach Enclosure

The City of Joondalup in conjunction with the State Government installed a beach enclosure at Sorrento Beach in late 2016, however at its November 2020 meeting, Joondalup Council unanimously resolved to remove the Sorrento Beach enclosure due to the compromised integrity of the structure. Removal of the beach enclosure has been completed.

The City will investigate options for the provision of a replacement enclosure. This will enable the City to adequately investigate and plan appropriately to implement a new enclosure, aided by the lessons learnt from the Sorrento Beach enclosure.

Reid Promenade car park – CBD

The City’s multi-storey car park is centrally located in the Joondalup City Centre.

There are 538 regular bays (including six disability parking bays) and six motorcycle bays in the public area of the car park.

It also offers:

  • Safe and secure parking
  • Undercover parking
  • Ticketless parking – Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) technology is used
  • Electric vehicle charging stations, in the main public car park
  • Access to the main public car park between 6.00am – 8.00pm weekdays (except public holidays)
  • Different rates for different parking options, e.g. Early Bird and Monthly Fee Services
  • 28 Premium reserved bays (including one disability parking bay) in the private area of the car park with 24 hour access

The Whitford Library’s foyer and external entrance walls have been transformed by Perth artist Sioux Tempestt.
Inspired by the stories of local residents, the intent of the imagery and colour palette is to highlight the uniqueness and beauty of Joondalup and its diverse community, in particular the coastal areas around Hillarys, and their influence on the lives of residents past and present. Sioux also incorporated photographs from the City’s Local History collection in the design.

Duncraig Library

About

Duncraig Library is a vibrant and welcoming community space enjoyed by people of all ages. The library opened in 1974 and as one of the top ten busiest Libraries in the state, it remains a favourite place for people to experience, learn and socialise.

In April 2019 a community artwork collaboration between students at Duncraig Primary School and WA artist Andrew Frazer was unveiled on the front wall. It celebrates the surrounding native flora and complements the flourishing community garden located in the library courtyard and surrounds. The garden is managed by Duncraig Edible Garden, a community driven project that promotes values of community, sustainability and sharing economies.

Technology training through the Libraries

City of Joondalup Libraries provide a number of technology training opportunities, including one-to-one training and assistance, small group presentations and online training.

Keystrokes

Keystrokes is a personalised, one-to-one program offered at all branches. Help with introductory computer skills such as internet navigation, eBook use, connecting with App stores and other basic technology skills is offered, including assistance with Government applications such as MyGov and Service WA. Participants need to have access to a device such as a smartphone, tablet, or laptop and bring it to the session. All participants are expected to have some basic knowledge of their device.

Digital Drop-in

Held on the first Friday of the month at Woodvale Library, this small-group session features a range of topics.

Groups and club membership

Clubs are great places to make new friends or pick up a new hobby. There are many benefits to joining a social club including:

  • Meeting new people
  • Picking up a new skill
  • Keeping mentally active and involved
  • Developing a sense community
  • Discovering new interests.

Book clubs

Book club members broaden their range of reading, increase their knowledge and meet new people by meeting to discuss their latest book. Book clubs meet once a month at all four City of Joondalup Libraries. Some clubs meet during the day and others the evening to accommodate most schedules. Brain games

Brain games is held at Joondalup Library every Monday at 2.00pm and Duncraig Library on the second Saturday of the month at 10.00am. Enjoy an hour of puzzles, quizzes and games, designed to exercise and stimulate the brain. These challenging activities, held in a fun and social environment, will get the grey matter firing and help improve cognition.

Camera club

The aim of the camera club is to assist members to improve their photographic skills and techniques by submitting regular works, through challenges, workshops and outings. Meetings are held monthly on a Friday afternoon, with additional excursions and workshops organised throughout the year. Chess afternoon

A session for anyone who wants to learn how to play chess or just have a friendly game. Join in at Woodvale Library every Thursday at 4.00pm. All welcome. Chess sets are provided. No bookings required.

Crochet group

Do you crochet? Would you like to crochet with others in a friendly, social group? Join in every Wednesday at either Whitford Library, 10.00am or Woodvale Library, 9.30am. All adults welcome. No bookings required.

French conversation group

These informal sessions would suit people travelling to French speaking countries or for those who just wish to practice speaking French. Attendees must have some French language skills to participate. Currently, weekly meetings are held at Joondalup Library on Thursday evenings. Contact the Joondalup Library on 9400 4712 to register your interest as numbers may be limited.

Games in the Library

Libraries have a great range of games for patrons to enjoy. They are for use in the libraries only, but can be played for the whole day. Bring a friend or two to your local library and enjoy the challenge. Alternatively, come along to a scheduled Game On! session at Joondalup Library on Thursday mornings at 10.00am. Choose to play Scrabble, Upwords, Backgammon, Yahtzee, Rummikub, card games and many more. No bookings required.

Jigsaw group

Meet other jigsaw enthusiasts at Duncraig Library every third Wednesday at 2.00pm. Have fun tackling different types of jigsaws whilst improving your memory and visual-spatial reasoning. All welcome. No bookings required.

Knitting groups

Knitting groups provide an opportunity for adults who knit or crochet to get together and socialise. Meet new people, create community craft projects, knit for charity or simply complete your own knitting work in the company of fellow knitters. All welcome. No bookings required.

Writers’ group

This group share their work, give and receive feedback, provide support and motivation, exchange ideas and expand and develop their writing. All forms of writing are encouraged. Minecraft Engineers is a fun weekly club where children use creative mode to build in Minecraft. Come along and build amazing things with redstone whilst developing STEM skills.

YAAS! – Young Adult Art Space

Young Artists are invited to showcase their work at the new City of Joondalup Libraries – Whitford Young Adult Art Space.

If you are a young artist (12 – 18 years old) who lives or goes to school in the City of Joondalup, or an art teacher who would like to showcase your students’ work, YAAS is for you. 

Artworks will be displayed for up to two months and can be submitted by the artist or their teacher.

Picture Joondalup – local history photographs

Picture Joondalup is an online collection of historical photographs representing a visual record of the history of the local area, from early European settlement until the present day.

Nearly 5,000 photos are available to view through the library catalogue, enter Keywords and select Picture Joondalup rather than Full Catalogue.

Usage

Images from Picture Joondalup may be used for research, study or personal purposes for free. If you would like to use Picture Joondalup images for other purposes eg in a commercial setting, please contact Local History.

Images for purchase

Digital copies of our photographs are available to purchase. Images can be provided by email, secure online file transfer, or USB. Image sizes vary, but purchased images will be supplied as the best available copy.

Iluka Beach

 

Featuring a small beach gazebo at one end of the beach and a boardwalk at the other, this small but idyllic location is popular for families looking for a sheltered stretch of beach to have a picnic or a dip in the crystal clear waters in this pristine part of Marmion Marine Park. If the kids are feeling more adventurous, perhaps visit the lookout and Iluka Foreshore Park with playground with toilet and BBQ facilities only a short walk away.

Iluka Beach is connected to the extensive and beautiful coastal footpath meandering along the coastline, providing further opportunity to enjoy this region by taking a nice stroll while enjoying the stunning views it offers.

Mullaloo Beach North

A family favourite, Mullaloo Beach North is a popular swimming beach, ideal for children of all ages, take a dip in the refreshing waters of the Indian Ocean or laze on the soft white sand. Enjoy a stroll, run or a bike ride on the beach paths that connect Mullaloo to neighbouring beaches along the coast.

Mullaloo Beach North features a lookout which sits atop a small hill. Why not take a brief walk to the top and drink in a spectacular Indian Ocean sunset.

Look out for seabirds, dolphins, sea lions, rays and a huge diversity of other species from the beach or lookout.

Joondalup Reception Centre

The Joondalup Reception Centre is a multipurpose community venue with a large function room, pre-function lobby and a gallery space available for hire. The Joondalup Reception Centre is the perfect venue for weddings, engagements, fundraisers, birthdays, and special occasions. The venue is also perfect for large meetings, workshops, networking and offers options for smaller breakaway spaces.

2024 Closure

The City of Joondalup administration building is undergoing construction from January 2024 – June 2024, which will affect the operations of the Joondalup Reception Centre. Unfortunately, the Centre will not be bookable during this time. Please contact the community venues bookings team for alternative options.

Capacity

Function Room: 300 square metres, 300 person capacity – with the potential to partition into two rooms.

Pre–Function Lobby: 100 square metres adjoining the function room – suitable space for registrations, pre-reception drinks, food service and tea and coffee stations.

The Gallery: 50 square metres – perfect place for pre drinks and canapes with access to outdoor space and gardens overlooking Central Park.

Parking: Ample free parking after 5pm on Fridays and weekends including accessible parking bays. Monday – Friday bookings. For further information about parking options, visit the City’s webpage.

Hillarys Beach Park (Whitfords Nodes Health and Wellbeing Hub)

Transformation into the health and wellbeing hub

Whitfords Nodes Health and Wellbeing Hub at Hillarys Beach Park now includes a large shaded public playground for the enjoyment of children aged between two and 12 years old. The playground includes swings, combination and climbing units, nature play elements, sand play and all-abilities play. The park also has many undercover picnic settings, benches and barbecues, new tree planting, an improved irrigation system, drink fountains and universal access footpaths.

Visitors to the park can also enjoy the iconic exercise stairway that extends to a height of 22m up the dune landscape and has 145 steps to climb with rest stops along the way. The top offers panoramic views of the coastline and the harbour. The exercise stairway is linked to multiple running tracks of varying lengths and difficulty through the park and the dunes. At the base of the stairway is a dedicated outdoor fitness equipment area suited to body weight exercises and calisthenics.

The health and wellbeing hub is also home to Australia’s largest outdoor park warrior course featuring 16 innovative and challenging obstacles over a 78 metre soft fall surface. Participants can register and record their times via an app, available by scanning a QR code located at the starting line of the course, allowing them to challenge themselves or others.

Joondalup Library – local history collection

Local history is a dedicated collection located on the lower ground floor of the Joondalup Library. Local history collects, preserves and celebrates the Joondalup region’s rich local heritage. It contains a variety of resources on the history, development, environment and culture of the Joondalup and Wanneroo area, and provides researchers with a picture of life in the region from Aboriginal times to the present day.

Help update local history records

Joondalup Library’s local history collection is a treasure trove of information about the early settlement of the City of Joondalup and Wanneroo areas. The local history team collects, preserves and celebrates the rich heritage of the area, and it’s always exciting when new historical details come to light.

Recently, the Lockwood family approached the City of Joondalup, detailing their family’s historical connection to the land around Lake Goolellal. The family operated a piggery from 1940 – 1969. The local history team have had the opportunity to add valuable documents and photos to the collection, and to to record an oral history with John Lockwood.

Local history for schools

Resources in the library

Local History, located on the lower ground floor at Joondalup Library, has a range of resources, including photographs, oral history interviews, newspaper clippings and other material documenting how the local area has changed over time, suitable for use by teachers to support the HASS curriculum.

Resources to borrow

All City of Joondalup schools can join the library as Institutional Members. Institutional Membership enables teachers to borrow a range of materials from Local History.

Aimed specifically at curriculum outcomes for Year four students, Investigating Joondalup’s Past kits contain:

  • Photographs
  • Maps
  • Oral history excerpts
  • Stories from the Suburbs booklets which document the history of each suburb.

To assist teachers with meeting outcomes in the primary history curriculum, the Local History staff have developed the resource My Learning Journal, which is available for loan on USB. This is relevant for years two to five, and topics covered include:

  • Who lived here first and how do we know?
  • How has the community changed?
  • Which environmental features have been lost, and which have been retained?
  • What contribution has been made by different groups and individuals in the community?
  • How and why do people choose to remember significant events of the past?

The Commemorating ANZAC kit – which tells students about ANZAC Day and the local men and women who served in Australia’s military forces, is available for loan on USB.

School tours and activities

School groups are welcome to participate in curriculum-linked activities as part of a Civic Centre and Library tour. Teachers and home-schoolers are welcome to contact Reference and Local History staff to organise library visits for students wishing to undertake research.

Year 12 ATAR Geography teachers can book classes in for an incursion, enabling students to access resources and information supporting a Unit 4 case study for Depth Study One, focussing on either the Ocean Reef Marina site and adjacent coastal areas or Lake Goollelal and the surrounding area.

Year 9 HASS teachers can book classes in for an incursion to support the Geographies of Interconnection module, focussing on planning, transport and land use in the City.

Toddler Time

Come along for stories, songs and rhymes with lots of action for your energetic toddler. Toddler Time is designed for children 18 to 30 months and their parents.

Tailored specifically for parents of babies and toddlers, these information sessions focus on learning, language and development. Topics include:

Books on Wheels is a free delivery service that caters to City of Joondalup residents who are unable to reach a City Library because of frailty, disability or limited mobility. Receiving the Books on Wheels service is not necessarily related to the age of a person.

    • long recuperation period at home or in care

Books on Wheels is not servicing customers who are isolating or in government imposed lockdown. Alternative services may be activated during a COVID-19 emergency. Please contact your nearest Library for options.

English conversation group

City of Joondalup Libraries have free, regular sessions to help you improve your English conversation skills in a relaxed and supportive group.

Sessions are held weekly at the Whitford Library on Tuesdays, 1.00pm – 2.30pm and the Joondalup Library on Wednesdays, 1.00pm – 2.30pm.

Anyone can join a Joondalup Library. Residents of any age, visitors, schools and care centres can join Joondalup Libraries. When you join at Joondalup, Duncraig, Whitford or Woodvale, your library membership will cover all the services offered at all four libraries.

Visit a Joondalup library and ask staff for a membership form to complete.

Children under 18 need a parent or guardian with ID to join them, but don’t need their own identification. The City’s libraries require official documents showing:

Discovery Sessions

Discovery Sessions provide life-long learning opportunities for all adults. They include information sessions and workshops on a variety of topics and give participants a taste of a subject they may wish to pursue in more detail at their leisure. Themes have covered topics such as arts and culture, travel, history, health and well-being and lifestyle.

Community directory

The City’s Community Directory is a great source of local information and your community group may be eligible for a listing. Your events may also be eligible for promotion in the City’s Event Calendar. Registration forms for both services are available under Related Services.
