Have yourself a sustainable little Christmas

Sustainable Christmas

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and we have lots of eco-friendly tips to help with your Christmas preparations so you can have a merry and sustainable Christmas.

Christmas is a great time of the year for celebrating with friends and family, and all this festive cheer is traditionally associated with lots of good food and drink, decorations and gift-giving.

Unfortunately, these festivities can result in extra waste and energy consumption and can have a significant burden on the environment. To help you celebrate in a sustainable way, we have created some eco-friendly tips and swaps to have the most sustainable Christmas.

Christmas is a great time of year to put the waste hierarchy into action. The content in the sections below aligns with the waste hierarchy categories:

  • Avoid – prevent waste in the first instance
  • Reduce – to produce less waste
  • Reuse – use the same item more than once
  • Recycle – converting waste materials into new materials and objects
  • Dispose – in the most environmentally responsible manner.

Sustainable Gift Guide

Christmas shopping doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg, and there are plenty of ways to save money and the environment when it comes to gift-giving.

Here are some tips to avoid purchasing items at Christmas time:

  • Do an audit of what you already have – around the home, in your wardrobe, and the pantry
  • Don’t impulse buy
  • Ask yourself, do you want or need this product?
  • Can you clean or fix a broken product and bring it back to ‘new’?
  • Focus on quality rather than quantity. Better quality products will generally last longer.
  • Organise a Secret Santa with your friends and/or family to reduce the amount of gifts.

Sustainable gift ideas to spread the Christmas cheer:

  • A class, course or workshop they can do by themselves or with you. The endless possibilities include a cooking or coffee course, a painting or pottery workshop, a guitar or golf lesson.
  • Gift an experience rather than a material gift. From a massage or spa day to a concert or a skydive – gift them memories they will never forget.
  • Use your culinary skills to make homemade food or drink gifts. Give the gift of homemade cookies, slices, relishes or pickles. Food is the way to everyone’s heart.
  • Consider offering a membership to a conservation organization, allowing them to enjoy magazines, discounts, and member benefits for their preferred attractions or subscriptions.
  • Consider gifting a bird bath or a frog hotel to attract local native wildlife to their garden.
  • Bokashi composting systems gift nourishing compost all year round.
  • Gift a native tree or plant. A gift that keeps on giving when it matures and attracts birds, wildlife and pollinators to the garden. Check out our Growing locals plant guide for some ideas.

Read more about the Australian Made Campaign which encourages businesses based within the region to consider their Australian-made goods and services. You may also find some sustainable gifts this Christmas.

Gift Wrapping

Most Christmas gift wrapping paper gets thrown into landfill because it isn’t recyclable. Wrapping paper options, bows and ribbons are laminated, dyed or contain glitter or other materials, which means they can’t be recycled appropriately.

The good news is there are lots of ways to wrap your gifts sustainably that are beautiful and budget-friendly, here are some waste-free ideas:

  • Use reusable Christmas stockings or sacks under the tree
  • Consider wrapping your gifts in newspaper brown craft paper or place them in a box
  • Reuse wrapping paper or gift bags you have received from others
  • Consider soy wax or bees wax wraps
  • Learn the art of furoshiki (fabric wrapping)
  • Use compostable and recyclable wrapping paper.

Christmas outfits

Rather than buying a new outfit, you could shop for clothing at second-hand stores or hire an outfit. You could also consider attending or hosting a festive Christmas clothes swap, where your friends, family or community members could exchange clothes so you all have a new outfit to wear at Christmas.

Christmas Feast

According to the National Food Waste Strategy, Australian households throw away 3.1 million tonnes of edible food each year.

Try some of these tips to avoid sending leftover food into landfill:

  • Meal planning – think about what you are cooking and who you are cooking for. Turkey has a lower carbon footprint than beef, and vegetarian options are even more sustainable.
  • Make your list and check it twice – after checking what you have in the pantry, write your list and stick to it while shopping.
  • Buy local food, and maybe even try to grow your own this year – check out Grow it Local or visit your closest Community Garden.
  • Let people serve their own plates – food left on plates can’t be used as leftovers.
  • Cook with your scraps – saving up onion skins, carrot tops, potato peels and other food scraps while cooking can all be used to create an amazing broth, perfect for making gravy and sauces.
  • Repurpose your leftovers – try creative new recipes with leftover food
  • Compost bins, worm farms and bokashi bins are great ways to discard any food waste you can’t repurpose. Use this beginner’s guide to composting, bokashi and worm farms to get you started. How To Compost Like A Champion | WasteSorted.
  • Have a ‘use it up’ shelf in your fridgeUse It Up Tape | OzHarvest | Easy way to waste less food at home

Sustainable Alternatives

A sustainable Christmas doesn’t mean missing out on all the fun traditions you enjoy, it’s about finding alternatives that are better for the environment so that we can continue spreading the Christmas cheer.

Here are some suggestions for sustainable alternatives to some Christmas traditions:

Christmas Purchase Sustainable Option
Advent Calendars Reusable, homemade, or plastic-free options.
Plastic Christmas tree A real Christmas tree or alternate locally native option, like the Wooly Bush.

Wooden Christmas tree.

Disposable plates and cutlery Don’t buy something to throw away the next day or to use once a year. You could borrow plates from family and friends for Christmas Day.
Tinsel, baubles and decorations Make a wreath from native plants that are compostable.

Make paper chains from recycled paper.

Incorporate natural elements.

Make use of our local Borrow and Share Bunting Library.

Buy second-hand.

Christmas cards DIY your own card, send a homemade e-card on Canva, or recycle your cards and gift tags.
Plastic wrapping paper Cloth wrapping. Watch a video on the Furoshiki (Japanese fabric wrapping) and use fabric from old garments or op shops.
Store bought Christmas crackers (they contain lots of plastic toys and knick knacks that get thrown away!) Use toilet rolls to make your own crackers, and write your own terrible (or terrific!) Christmas jokes.

Ideas to include in the cracker:

  • A voucher so they can buy a coffee
  • Reusable produce bags
  • Soap nuts
  • Plant seeds.

Waste Disposal

Remember, waste should be viewed as a last resort. However, if you do need to use your bins, here is a reminder of where some Christmas items should be placed:

  • Plastic Christmas trees – general waste bin
  • Real Christmas tree – garden organics green waste bin
  • Leftover food – if compostable, compost bin, bokashi bin, worm farm, and then general waste
  • Wrapping paper that is plain or with prints – recycling bin
  • Wrapping paper that has been laminated, dyed, contains glitter, metal or plastic – general waste bin
  • Boxes from gifts – flattened cardboard boxes go in the recycling bin
  • Batteries – take them to a special drop-off point. There are many located around the City of Joondalup in shops such as Coles, Woolworths, and in City buildings (libraries and Administration Building)
  • Beer bottles and cans – save up and return to your nearest Containers for Change drop-off point or recycling bin (no lids in the recycling bin)
  • Wine bottles – recycling bin (no lids in the recycling bin)
  • Cards – recycling bin
  • Tinsel – general waste
  • Turkey frame and seafood remnants – general waste
  • Textiles – if they cannot be sold, donated, used as rags, etc., general waste bin.

Make sure anything going into the recycling bin is clean and loose. Don’t forget that no bin can weigh more than 70kg.

Christmas Carbon Footprint

Having high spirits doesn’t have to mean having a high carbon footprint or high bills come January.

Here are some ways you can lower your Christmas carbon footprint:

  • Transport – think about using sustainable transport options over the holidays. Use sustainable transport options such as walking, riding your bike, catching public transport or car-pooling when attending Christmas gatherings.
  • Energy consumption – Reduce your energy consumption by turning off Christmas lights when they aren’t needed, and if you want to purchase new lights, consider LED bulbs or solar-powered lights. Find out more ways to reduce energy use.
  • Water – Everyone can do their bit to reduce water use in the home and garden this Christmas. You can also nourish your garden by turning your food and compostable waste into food and nutrients from worm farming, composting and using bokashi bins. Find out more ways to save water.

Have a merry sustainable Christmas!

Supporting our Sustainable Local Businesses

There are so many ways to make a difference to our planet and community. One of the easiest choices you can make is to support local businesses that uphold their environmental responsibility through their products, services and practices.

The Sustainability and Innovation Award 2023

The Joondalup Business Association (JBA) Awards is a night to celebrate some of the community’s local businesses and their successes. Held on Saturday 12 August 2023, the event was sponsored by Edith Cowan University’s School of Business and Law.

The Sustainability and Innovation Award celebrates the City’s businesses that are leading the change in the sustainability space, leading with purpose and a vision for an environmentally sustainable future.

The winner of the award for 2023 was Supernatural Hair and Beauty, a hair and beauty salon in Joondalup with a sustainable purpose and social mission.

An environmental mission into the future

Supernatural pride themselves in achieving the highest standards of sustainability in all of their practices. From packaging and product ingredients to waste reduction and workplace practices; Supernatural run their business with passion and a pursuit for environmental sustainability.

Supernatural Hair and Beauty started in Port Hedland 12 years ago.

After six years of success in Joondalup, they know the impact that sustainable practices within a workplace can have on influencing the community. Their embrace of sustainable practices not only means they are leading the change in tackling climate change but are also meeting the community’s demand for more environmentally friendly brands they can trust.

Reducing waste in the workplace

The duo’s passions for the environment, their minimalistic lifestyle and their ‘less is more’ attitude has been reflected all throughout their business practices and processes.

This year, Deanna and Jessica have been focusing on reducing the amount of their waste ending up in landfill. They have successfully been able to repurpose 95% of their salon waste.

As a ‘Sustainable Salons’ member, Supernatural has prevented over 40kg of hair, 154kg of plastics, 275g of paper and 207kg of metals from landfill. As part of the initiative, they have also contributed to over 276,340 meals being donated to people in need.

Sustainability is everyone’s business

Whether you’re a business owner, an employee, or a community member wanting to be more sustainable, these tips from Supernatural Hair and Beauty will help you along your sustainability journey.

Know what you are purchasing and where it’s coming from

Finding out how the things we use and consume are made, where they came from, how they are transported, and where their waste ends up are questions we could all be asking in every transaction we make.

The journey of sustainability starts with consuming less

Creating less waste should come first, then we can focus on reusing or recycling the waste we can’t reduce.

Look for sustainable alternatives from sustainable focused businesses

Every positive change you make is a step towards a better future. Switching to a more sustainable brand creates greater demand for ‘greener’ products and services.

Buy in bulk

One way of reducing your waste is buying in bulk amounts to reduce packaging waste. Buying a 1L shampoo bottle instead of four normal sized 250ml bottles, reduces plastic containers and saves you money. Look for ways to do this in all areas of your consumption.

Be accountable for the businesses you support

If you own a business, partnering with brands that you align with as a company is crucial to managing your environmental impact. Set your standards high and keep up to date with the market.

Supporting local sustainable businesses not only supports the environment but also helps our community flourish.

Plastic Free July 2023

Plastic Free July is recognised globally as an annual month of global action where individuals, businesses and governments come together to take action to reduce plastic waste, creating a social change movement. By sharing ideas, positive actions and stories of change, Plastic Free July helps people and organisations “choose to refuse” single-use plastic everyday. Last year, an estimated 140 million people worldwide took part in Plastic Free July. On average, participants reduced their household waste and recycling by 15kg per person. As part of the City’s ongoing efforts to reduce waste going into landfill and to protect the environment and support WA’s Plan for Plastic, the City has partnered with the Plastic Free July organisation again in 2023 to help the community take action to end plastic waste. Upcoming event for residents to attend to learn ways in which they can reduce the use of plastic:

Waste Services FAQs

What is included in the City’s annual waste service?

The annual waste refuse charge for residents include:

  • Three-bin kerbside collection service.
  • Bulk waste collection. For further information, visit myJoondalup to arrange a bulk waste collection.
  • Bulk green waste collection (scheduled). For further information, visit bulk green waste webpage.
  • Garden organic waste vouchers – download your voucher on myJoondalup.

What are the three bins used for?

  • Red for general household waste.
  • Lime green for green waste.
  • Yellow for recycling.

The City has aligned the waste service to the Australian Standard for bin lid colours. This is to aid source separation of waste and for each bin to be clearly identifiable.

What does the standard service look like?

  • One 140L (or upgraded 240L) red lid bin for general waste, emptied weekly.
  • One 240L yellow lid bin for recycling, emptied fortnightly.
  • One 240L lime green lid bin for garden organic waste, emptied fortnightly.

How does the kerbside collection service work?

Each week, a standard service will see a household present two bins on the verge for collection:

  • The general waste bin (red lid) and recycling bin (yellow lid), or
  • The general waste bin (red lid) and garden organic bin (lime green lid).

Find your waste collection dates by visiting the City’s webpage.

Why do I have three bins?

  • Give residents greater capacity for recycling garden organic waste in the lime green lid bin.
  • Reduces the environmental impacts of sending organic waste to landfills.
  • Reduce the impact of increasing landfill costs on the annual refuse charge to ratepayers.
  • Increases material recovery through the recycling bin.

My recycling bin is full every fortnight. What can I do?

The City offers a 50% larger recycling bin (360L) for free. If you are generating a lot of recycling, you can also request an additional recycling bin. This can only be authorised by the property owner or agent (additional fees apply to annual rates).  Please visit myJoondalup to request the larger 360L recycling bin or to request an additional recycling bin.

I’m worried my waste won’t fit in the 140L general waste bin. What can I do?

Make sure all your recycling is placed in the yellow lid recycling bin and your green waste is placed in the lime green lid green waste bin. Come along to one of the City’s events where further information on how to reduce the waste created at home will be available. You can also upgrade the 140L general waste bin to a 240L bin (additional fees apply).

My 140L general waste bin is always full before collection day. What can I do?

The City encourages residents to become more sustainable and find ways to reduce the amount of waste they place in the waste bin. Households that have attempted to reduce their waste but still regularly overfill the 140L red lid general waste have the option to upgrade the 140L bin for a 240L general waste bin.  Upgrades of the general waste bin can only be authorised by the property owner or agent (additional fees apply to annual rates).  Please visit myJoondalup to request the larger bin.

Can I put my food waste in the garden organics bin?

No, the garden organics bin is for garden green waste only. Please only place loose garden organic waste in this bin.

My garden organics bin is full every fortnight. What can I do?

Additional green waste can be taken to the Wangara Greens Recycling Facility, 70 Motivation Drive, Wangara on Saturday – Sunday.  This is a free service using a greens tipping voucher, which can be downloaded on the myJoondalup. Fees may apply without a valid voucher. You can also request an additional garden organics bin for your property on myJoondalup. This can only be authorised by the property owner or agent (additional fees apply to annual rates).

Can I have a bigger garden organics bin?

No, as the weight limit on all bins is 70kg. Garden organic waste can be quite heavy, therefore the bin size is 240L in size. You can request an additional garden organics bin on myJoondalup.

I am not sure where to put a certain type of material. Can you help me?

Check out the online Waste Disposal Guide. If you are still unsure, please give the City a call on 9400 4000.

Asbestos and disposal for residents

Asbestos is a hazardous material. Left undisturbed in buildings, asbestos cement products pose little risk to health, so there is no need to remove or coat asbestos cement materials that are in good condition. All asbestos cement products can be removed safely without causing a risk to the public or workers, provided safe work procedures are followed.

Disposal options

Persons removing asbestos cement products must comply with the Health (Asbestos) Regulations 1992, the Occupational Safety and Health Regulations 1996 and Environmental Protection (Controlled Waste) Regulations 2004.

  1. The safest way to remove asbestos, and the City highly recommends, residents engage a licensed asbestos removal specialist – Yellow Pages. Any business contracted to remove greater than 10 square metres of bonded asbestos need to hold an Asbestos Removal Licence.
  1. There is an option for self-disposal (conditions apply). The closest disposal location for Joondalup is Tamala Park, Mindarie Regional Council (MRC).

Cost

  • Monday – Saturday – $275.00 per tonne
  • Sunday – Free (conditions apply).

A maximum of 165kg (approx. 3 – 4 fencing sheets) can be dropped off for free. This quantity of asbestos is in line with the commercial guidelines for safe disposal without a licence. Residents can make multiple visits to a maximum of five (5) after which MRC reserve the right to refuse entry and/or charge. For asbestos loads over 165kg, the first 165kg will be free and the additional kg will be charged at the normal asbestos rate.

Preparing asbestos for disposal at Tamala Park

  • Be wrapped in heavy duty (200 micron) builders plastic and sealed with strong duct tape
  • Be clearly labelled ‘CAUTION ASBESTOS’
  • Ensure you have someone with you to help off-load the asbestos

To find out more information on preparing asbestos for disposal, please refer to the Tamala Park website Asbestos Drop Off.

Preparing the green waste

  • All bulk green waste must be placed loose on the verge (no boxes, bags or containers).
  • Bulk green waste is shredded and mulched, therefore, it cannot be contaminated with any other waste. All non-green waste items will be considered as littering.
  • Do not place bulk green waste on artificial turf, stencilled paving or near water meters or power domes.
  • For small amounts of green waste or loose leaves, place into your lime green lid garden organics bin.

If you missed your bulk green waste collection or can’t wait for your scheduled collection, residents can drop off their garden waste using a green waste tipping voucher. Download green waste vouchers on the City’s webpage.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) disposal

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) refers to the products used in and around the home that are flammable, toxic, explosive or corrosive such as acid, aerosols and paint.

These items can be dropped off in domestic quantities at the permanent drop off facilities, free of charge, seven days a week. The facilities are at Tamala Park Recycling Centre and Recycling Centre Balcatta. View the full list of what you can drop off

This project is supported by the Government of Western Australia and the Waste Authority.

Asbestos can be dropped off at Tamala Park Tip – fees apply. The facility also operates free drop-off for domestic quantities of asbestos every Sunday – conditions apply.

If you have any questions on asbestos disposal, call Tamala Park directly on 9306 6303.

General waste bin (red lid)

Tips for using your general waste bin:

Reducing waste

Avoid – prevent waste in the first instance

  • Maintain and repair items rather than disposing of them
  • Grow your own fruit, vegetables, herbs and nuts at home
  • Purchase quality products that have no or minimal packaging.

Reduce – to produce less waste

  • Refuse single plastic e.g. coffee cups, produce bags
  • Purchase in bulk where possible
  • Say no to junk mail
  • Use beeswax wraps instead of cling wrap or foil
  • Only purchase what you need.

Reuse – use the same item more than once

  • Take your own reusable shopping and produce bags to the shops
  • Consider hosting a garage sale
  • Find creative ways to repurpose waste for practical purposes, art projects or gifts
  • Consider purchasing eco-friendly products made from recycled materials
  • Opt for reusable rather than disposable products, such as keep cups instead of disposable coffee cups, carry your own utensils to avoid single use knives, forks and spoons
  • Take reusable items to the REUSE shop at Tamala Park.

Recycle – converting waste materials into new materials and objects

  • Recycle all paper, cardboard, milk and juice cartons, glass bottles and jars, aluminium and steel cans, plastic bottles and containers in the yellow lid recycling bin
  • Green waste from the lime green lid is turned into compost
  • Place food or garden waste in a compost or worm farm at home
  • Take eligible containers to a Containers for Change drop off point
  • Clean and undamaged clothes can be donated to a local charity shop
  • Local schools can participate in a waste education program funded by the City of Joondalup, please visit the City’s Waste education page or call 9400 4077 for further information.

Recycling Processing

The items you dispose of in your yellow lid recycling bin are taken to a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) where they are separated into the different material type.

The separation of the recycling involves the items being put onto conveyor belts that are connected to sorting machines and separated into different materials such as; paper and cardboard, plastics, aluminium, steel and glass.

These materials are then shipped to the recycling plants to be re-made into new things. Some of the recycling plants are in Australia with others overseas, mostly in Asia.

Car battery and engine oil

Batteries, oil and other hazardous products must not be disposed of in household waste and recycling bins. These are considered Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and therefore must be taken to the correct drop off facility for processing and recycling.

There are several drop off centres that residents can continue to effectively and safely dispose of batteries and motor oils, free of charge:

  • Tamala Park Recycling Facility, 1700 Marmion Avenue, Mindarie
  • Recycling Centre Balcatta, 238 Balcatta Road, Balcatta
  • Wangara Greens Recycling Facility, 70 Motivation Drive, Wangara
  • Various retail outlets that sell batteries and engine oils who have disposal options which may be local to you.

Search the waste disposal guide or HHW page for more information.
